Fall Cleanup: How to Dispose Of Autumn Leaves

10/24/2017 7:32 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
After capturing picture-perfect moments of you and your loved ones with the falling leaves of the autumn season, what’s next?

Because of fall’s colors and autumn leaves, it’s one of the best seasons to capture picture-perfect memories. However, after taking IG-worthy shots, this season requires more cleaning and raking to do to keep the home tidy.

After gathering the fallen leaves you’ve raked or piled, here are tips on how to dispose them of to jumpstart your fall cleanup:

Turn them into mulch.

After gathering the fallen leaves you’ve collected, shred them using a lawn mower, leaf shredder, or a wood chipper. Another way to make mulch out of your fallen leaves is by placing the shredded leaves inside a plastic bin and breaking them into smaller bits using a grass trimmer.

Mulch is a layer of shredded leaves that is spread over the surface of the soil. It retains the moisture in the soil, keeps the soil cool, improves the soil’s fertility, suppresses weeds, and any garden look more appealing. So, turn fallen leaves into a free supply of garden mulch.

Give the leaves away.

If you have no time to tend to your garden, you can give away your collected pile of fallen leaves to your neighbors or to a local community that accepts leaves for recycling. For some local counties, the facility may even send someone to remove and collect the leaves for you.

Most local communities conduct community-wide fall leaf collection drives in their areas. To be a part of this, feel free to contact your local township, city, or county and ask about their leaf collection schedules and options, specific regulations, and other relevant information.

Use them as fertilizer.

To create an organic and healthy fertilizer for your lawn and garden, put your collected leaves into a compost pile alongside grass cuttings, fruit and vegetable scraps, sticks, pine straws, and a little soil. This will result in a high quality, nitrogen-rich compost that’ll grow healthier plants.

To have a fine compost ready for spring planting season, make sure to turn your compost heap three to four times weekly. To prevent your compost pile from getting too dry or too wet, you can cover it with plastic. It will keep the warmth in and speed up the breaking down process.

Let the leaves degrade.

Another way to dispose of fallen autumn leaves is to leave them be. In time, leaves will naturally degrade and decompose by themselves. But, it is still recommended to chop and reduce your collected leaves into shreds and bits before leaving them scattered all over your lawn.

You can also return the leaves to the earth by digging them in with a tiller. All you need to do is dig a pit and till the shredded leaves into the soil. Then, leave the leaves be. Before the arrival of spring, you’ll be able to supply and feed your lawn with organic matter and nutrients.

Create craft projects.

Autumn leaves make great art and craft projects because of their unique shapes and colors. With the variety of shapes, sizes, and colors of autumn leaves, there are a lot of craft projects to make. More than that, these DIY projects can be enjoyed by both adults and the young ones.

There are various ways to preserve and turn leaves into art. Autumn leaves can be made into wreaths, fall foliage decorations, bookmarks, wall art pieces, coasters, and other similar crafts. Autumn leaves can also be used as stamps to make personalized cards, linens, etc.

Keep your fallen leaves neat and tidy with the above tips. Discover the creative ways to dispose of your pile of collected fallen leaves!
