Gardening Tips That Will Save Your Plants In the Fall

10/2/2016 10:42 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
Gardening in the fall is more than just raking all the fallen leaves in your yard. You also need to help your garden survive the cold weather and bloom come the spring season.

During fall and winter, the days are shorter while the nights are longer. Because of this change of season, plants lack a supply of light and water for food-making or photosynthesis.
So, to help you make sure your plants survive the coming fall and winter season, see tips below:

Prepare your fall gardening tools.

Find and prepare the right tools to get your gardening tasks done in a breeze. With the right tools, you can keep your garden and yard in tip-top shape whatever the season is. But, this coming fall and winter season, here are a few of the gardening tools you need to get started:

  • Leaf blower vacuum. To declutter your yard from the accumulated pile of fallen leaves, use a leaf blower vacuum that comes with electric blowers. As compared to the gasoline-powered ones, this type is more quiet and environment-friendly.
  • Various kinds of rakes. In gardening, you will need different types of rakes for different purposes – a tiny and short one with a long handle for tight spaces, a clog-free rake to avoid jammed tines, and a dual-tine leaf rake for quicker clean ups.
  • Freestanding tip bags. Secure medium and large-sized tip bags for easy dumping of fallen leaves and other garden wastes.
  • Leaf shedder. A shredder will be useful in turning your fallen leaves into garden mulch. Mulch improves the health and fertility of the garden soil while reducing weed growth. In using the shredder, just make sure you’re wearing goggles and gloves.
  • Boots and gloves. A pair of garden boots is essential to keep your feet firmly planted in the ground when you are gardening. Likewise, a pair of tough gloves is needed to keep your hands warm and protected when handling different gardening tools.
  • Clean up and dispose fallen fruits

Steer clear of diseased plants in your garden. Bag them for trash pick-up. Avoid adding them to your compost pile unless your pile is hot enough to kill the organisms from these diseased plants. Likewise, gather and dispose fallen fruits as they can attract disease organisms and even pests.

Don't totally rake all the leaves

Yes, you read that right. You can leave the fallen leaves under the trees with sturdy ground covers. Over time, this fallen leaves can decompose and transform into an organic compost. However, you must rake and clear out fallen leaves on grass lawns and perennial plants like tomatoes, etc. Not raking leaves in these places can cause crown rot and attract fungi, pests, and some insects.

    Protect your plants from frost

Frost can harm very tender plants. To save and lengthen the lives of vulnerable plants like houseplants, tropical, salad greens, herbs, citrus trees, tomato, corn, pepper, spring-blooming shrubs, etc., tuck them inside a frost blanket or cover. A frost blanket can protect your plants in temperatures as low as 24ºF. You can also dig up tender bulbs and bring them indoors instead.

    Continue taking action against pests.

Be reminded that pest infestation remains high until the first frost. So, you better ready your line of defense against insects and pests. To do this, you can either place plant covers, handpick and destroy insects from infested plants, or use organic pesticide if needed.

Pests to be wary of in the fall include lawn grubs, brown marmorated stink bugs, boxelder bugs, bagworms, slugs, snails, yellow jackets, webworms, cutworms, aphids, beetles, and caterpillars.

How you take care of your garden in the fall can greatly affect what you will reap in the spring. So besides tidying up fallen leaves in your garden, consider the tips above to help your plants survive the fall and winter season.

If you’re short on time but high on budget, you can hire a professional landscaper to care for your garden. Happy gardening
