How to Avoid Electrical Hazards this Holiday Season

12/25/2017 4:48 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
If not careful, electrical decorations that come with the holidays can bring hazards that may endanger the home and the whole family.

“While holiday decorations contribute to the splendor of the season, they can also increase the risk of fires and electrical injuries if not used safely,” reminds Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI)’s President Brett Brenner.

During the winter months, different events and festivities are celebrated all around the world. However, it is during the winter months that incidents of house fires and electrical accidents also increase because seasonal decorations are often accompanied by different electrical hazards.

With that, here are guidelines to celebrate safety and avoid electrical hazards during the holidays:

Decors

  • If you plan to use traditional candles, make sure to keep them away from flammable materials, and never leave an open fire unattended. If possible, consider using the battery-powered ones instead.
  • Never leave any electrical decoration turned on and any candle lit up especially when leaving home or going to bed.
  • Only use authentic electrical decorations and products. Always buy electrical products from reputable sellers.
  • In purchasing an artificial tree, only buy one with a “fire resistant” label. However, if you’re opting for a real tree, choose the fresh one and water it daily. A tree that’s kept fresh is less likely to pose a fire or electrical hazard even when decorated with lights and other electrical decorations.

Lights

  • Before putting up lights as decorations, check them first and make sure there aren’t any broken or damaged bulbs.
  • If some bulbs need replacement, only use replacement bulbs from the original supplier.
  • Make sure to unplug any lighting decoration –both indoors and outdoors– before leaving home or going to sleep.
  • Always read and completely follow the manufacturers’ instructions attached to holiday lightings and decorations.
  • Look for appropriate approval stickers and certifications to ensure the authenticity and safety of your holiday lights.

Sockets

  • Limit the use of extension leads or adaptors to avoid the electrical hazards that come with overloaded sockets. You can also use Electrical Safety First’s overload calculator for checking and computations.
  • Never plug an extension cord or lead into another. Strictly use only one socket per extension lead or cord.
  • Be wary of the different danger signs that come with overloaded sockets. These signs include a smell of burning plastic, sparks or smoke, scorch marks around the socket or plug, damaged leads, etc.
  • Keep the third prong on plugs intact as it is placed there to prevent shock in any case of electrical equipment failure.
  • Only purchase and use a space heater that carries an approval or certification of an independent testing laboratory.
  • Position space heaters away from high traffic areas and at least three feet away from flammable materials like papers, carpets, rugs, clothing, and other items that can burn.
  • Never plug space heaters on power strips or extension cords. They should be plugged in directly into a wall outlet.
  • Stop the use of a space heater if you see the plug is damaged, frayed, worn, or broken to avoid any electrical accident.
  • Use newer space heater models that are equipped with the current safety features. It should also carry the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label.

Take note of these tips. Here at Home Buys Plus, we wish you a warm and bright yet safe holidays!
