How to Clean the Surprisingly Dirtiest Spots in Your Home

10/9/2016 7:12 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
Surprise, surprise! Your home isn’t as clean as you think it is. No matter how clean your home looks, germs are still lurking everywhere. In fact, some of the dirtiest spots in your home may be a surprise.

With germs, what you see isn’t always what you get. In fact, it’s impossible to see germs with the naked eye. Some of these household germs that can make you sick include yeast and mold, fecal matter, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus.

So, to assure your family of a home that’s thoroughly clean from the inside out, you must be wary of the surprisingly dirtiest and most germ-filled spots in your home.

Kitchen sink and counter

As compared to other areas in your home, it is in your kitchen where most bacteria are lurking around. Areas of food preparation and storage are found to have more bacteria and fecal matter than other areas in your home. For a germ-free kitchen, you need to:

  • Frequently clean and disinfect your kitchen sink and counter;
  • Prevent grime build-up in your kitchen sink and counter;
  • Heat sponges in the microwave or soak them in water and bleach to kill bacteria;
  • Replace or wash clean your towels and dish rags at least every week; and
  • Use disinfectant wipes on kitchen surfaces to eliminate the existence of germs.

Toothbrush cup or holder

You may not notice it, but your toothbrush cup or holder can be a breeding ground for molds, germs, and bacteria. The toothbrush cup or holder tends to collect and store drips and dirt from just-used toothbrushes which can result in germ contamination. Eek!

To make sure your toothbrushes are free from germs, molds, and other bacteria, mind to clean your toothbrush cup or holder too. Give it a regular scrub for sanitation.

Knobs and switches

Handles, knobs, and switches are often disregarded during household cleaning. However, these less-than-obvious areas for germs actually rank high regarding bacteria and also needs attention. They become dirty and contaminated with germs without you noticing it.

So, to make sure you’re only laying your hands on a clean light switch, door knob, or cabinet handles, don’t forget these little areas when you’re cleaning the house.

When food and drink spills accumulate inside your fridge, it can be a breeding ground for nasty smells and bacteria. Just as you make an effort to clean your fridge’s exteriors, you must also make an extra effort to clean it on the inside by following the tips below:

  • Remove all contents of your fridge before cleaning;
  • Be prompt in cleaning up spills using warm water and dishwashing liquid;
  • Use baking soda to remove stubborn stains and nasty odors;
  • Remove expired or rotten items as soon as possible; and
  • Separate raw food items from the others to avoid contamination.

Remote control

Like cell phones, your remote control can be a potential germ carrier. Because you’re constantly touching your remote control with your hands, the germs in your hands can be transferred to the remote, then to another person who’ll use it next. Sounds nasty, right?

To prevent the spreading of germs, wash your hands before using your remote control. More than that, make sure to use disinfectant wipes to wipe your remote – regularly.

Washing machine

Your laundry area, especially your washing machine, can be a breeding ground for molds, mildew, and germs. Wet items can easily attract mold build-up so do not leave any wet laundry in the washing machine or your laundry area even for just a few minutes.

Your clothes won’t be thoroughly clean if your washing machine is not clean enough. We suggest you wipe clean and disinfect your machine’s washing drum frequently.

Didn’t think these areas and equipment in your home are dirty spots, right? Now that you know better, take an extra time to clean these spots too when cleaning your home.
