In every 15 seconds, a home burglary takes place in the United States which often results in an average of $1, 600 in losses. Burglary cases rise during vacation seasons like Thanksgiving, Christmas, summer, and other holidays.
It’s okay to plan your itineraries, outfits, etc. for your dream vacation, but you shouldn’t neglect securing your home before you leave. It wouldn’t be nice to come home to an empty house after a relaxing and memorable getaway, right?
With that, here are tips on how you can keep your home safe and secure while you’re on vacation:
Even if you’re not going away for a vacation, always practice being discreet and low-key with your possessions. Avoid leaving out appliance packages and receipts, your expensive car included, by the curb. Any evidence of you having a lot of $$$$$ can signal a burglar that there are other expensive things to steal inside your home.
If you have dogs around, then all you need is to just display them for people to see. Dogs, no matter the size, can deter potential burglars. However, if you don’t have a dog, you can still display a “Beware of Dogs” signage outside your house. To make it appear more realistic, display and place a dog bowl and chain at your backdoor.
Install a home security system you can connect to your smartphone. This way, wherever you may go, you can still keep an eye on your home. The mere presence of a home security system can deter thieves to push through with the burglary. But before you leave, make sure that the security system’s cameras and alarms are working well.
Although it is most common to hide your valuable possessions and documents in your dresser, night stand, medicine cabinets, mattress, or anywhere in the main rooms, be mindful that these are the first places burglars look into. Hide your valuables in the attic, basement, children’s bedrooms, kitchen, or the broom closet instead.
Lock and secure all doors, windows, and other possible entries to your home – garage and pet doors included. Make sure to install double locks, guards, security bars, etc. to your doors and windows to secure your home against burglars and intruders. Having solid wood or metal doors is also a plus; they’re less likely to be broken in.
Don’t give burglars an opportunity to break into your home with your own tools. Secure and keep away ladders, tools (screwdrivers, pry bars, hammers, etc.), and other possible objects that can be used by burglars to enter your home. If possible, make sure to chain and lock them as well. You can’t let your own tools be used against you.
An unlit home for a week straight is one of the signals burglars consider before breaking into a home; it signals that the owners of the house are away and on vacation. But, a home with lights left open pretty much signals the same thing. For better security, time your lights on random mode for a more realistic indoor and outdoor lighting.
Entrust your home to a trusted friend, relative, or neighbor while you’re away. More than handling your mails, garbage, lawn, etc., ask them to update you if ever a suspicious individual eyes your home. With the help of a trusted person, your house will look well-maintained and lived-in even when the whole household’s away for a vacation.
Only share your vacation information to trusted people. As much as possible, be discreet about your vacation whereabouts and never talk about them in public places. More than that, while you’re on vacation, refrain from posting your vacation updates and photos on social media. Upload them when you’re back home instead.
Most of the above tips all boil down to making your home appear lived-in while you’re away. You can’t just leave and advertise that you’re on vacation and no one’s left at home, right? You have to make sure that your home appears the same as if you’re there – mowed lawn, empty mailbox, normal lighting schedules, and a lot more.
Although it won’t be possible to make your home completely “burglar-proof,” with the above tips, you can make it a less appealing target for burglars. You’ll surely enjoy your vacation more if you have peace that the home you left is secure and well-taken care of.
