How to Make Your Baby Sleep Peacefully (So You Could Too)

Whether you’re a new parent or not, you can’t deny that parenthood, especially taking care of a baby or a toddler, requires sacrifice – a goodnight’s sleep included. Although babies, especially newborns, typically sleep for up to 17 hours a day, most of them can’t stay asleep for more than two to four hours at a time.

As your baby wakes up, you need to be awake as well. That is why you need to develop and implement a plan to help your baby sleep peacefully so you could too. With that, here are baby sleep tips you can practice:

#1 Employ proper lighting.

Lighting doesn’t only affect the sleeping patterns of adults; it affects the sleep quality of babies too. A well-lit room signals a child to be active. On the opposite, darkness or dim lighting triggers the child’s brain to release the sleep hormone melatonin.

To establish healthy sleep habits in your child and help him distinguish the difference between day and night, make his day bright and his nights darker. This way, your child can easily determine when it’s time to be awake and to be asleep. To do this:

  • Allow plenty of sunlight into your child’s room or your house during the day.
  • Install dimmer lights or a nightlight in your child’s room when it’s time to sleep.
  • If your child finds it difficult to nap during the day, try installing room-darkening blinds.
  • If your child wakes up in the middle of the night, soothe him back to sleep without turning the lights on.

#2 Avoid eye contact during sleeping time.

While you may find it difficult to avoid gazing into your cute baby’s eyes, know that eye contact can signal playtime and snap your child out of his sleep zone. When it’s time to sleep, as much as possible, avoid making eye contact with your child. Gaze on his belly, sing a lullaby, massage him, or tell stories instead. Just don’t make eye contact.

#3 Create consistent bedtime routines.

Following a consistent bedtime routine can help establish healthy sleep patterns. In creating a bedtime routine for you and your child, see which works best. Then, be consistent in following it. A bedtime routine can include bath time, massage, storytelling, swaddling, cuddles, etc. With a bedtime routine, your child will have a cue for sleep time.

#4 Let your child soothe himself to sleep.

Even before your child completely dozes off to sleep, lay him in bed already. The best time to put your child to bed is when he’s drowsy, not when he’s completely asleep. This way, he will learn how to get back to sleep in case he wakes in the middle of the night – without the need to cry and wake you up. It’ll also benefit your child in the long run.

#5 Ensure bedroom safety.

According to a study, 80% of emergency room visits of babies from 1991 to 2011 were caused by cribs, carriers, and strollers. These nursery products caused accidents that led to concussions and other similar head injuries. So when purchasing a crib, carrier, or a stroller, always go for one that complies with the latest CPSC safety standards.

As early as now, establish healthy sleep patterns in your child. Follow the above tips to help your baby sleep peacefully. This way, you can also enjoy your much-deserved sleep as well!
