How to Ready Your Home for the Holidays

9/4/2017 6:58 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
September is here. Holidays will be here before we know it. Read on to learn how to make your home ready and welcoming for your guests.

In some parts of the world, especially in Asia, September signals the start of the holiday season. In the USA, September marks the unofficial last hurrah of summer on Labor Day weekend. From there, many other holidays and festivals follow.

Having that said, here are a few tips on how you can ready your home for the upcoming holidays:

Start with a to-do list.

It’s hard to start doing what needs to be done without a to-do list. To make sure you won’t miss out on any of your holiday-related tasks, prepare a to-do list or a task checklist. Prioritize your tasks according to need and urgency. Decluttering? Ironing table cloths? Polishing silverware? Preparing guestrooms for sleepovers? Whatever task you need to do, list it down.

With a to-do list available, you can also delegate specific tasks to the different members of your household. Involve your older children in all your holiday preparations at home. Besides being able to finish your task list in lesser time, you’ll also be able to teach your children to be responsible and accountable even while they’re young. Ready to start? Make a to-do list now.

Declutter your home.

Before you bring in more people and more stuff into your home, find time to declutter. For a more efficient strategy, declutter your home by category like clothes, decors, books, etc. Then, while doing so, divide the items into four boxes or piles: Keep, Throw, Donate, and Sell. Only leave items that you’re sure to use in the near future. Stop hoarding a lot of stuff at home.

In decluttering your home, you can also follow Marie Kondo’s KonMari method. While rummaging through your stuff, ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If an item doesn’t spark joy in you anymore, get rid of it already. Consider donating them to a local organization or shelter especially in this time of need. Your old stuff might be able to spark joy in others who need them most.

Ready your guest rooms.

During holidays, be prepared for guests who will sleep over in your home. If you are hosting holiday parties in your home, you must ready a room or carve a sleeping space specifically for guests who would stay for a night or two. Make sure to provide them with comfortable sleeping arrangements and all the other needs they may require like clean towels, toiletries, etc.

Prep your kitchen.

During the holidays, the kitchen becomes the command center or the busiest place in the house. With this, you need to make sure it’s ready for the chores, extra helpers, and your guests. Prepare extra storage, stools, and chairs. Clear up your countertops of cooking utensils and supplies you won’t be using for a more spacious area for preparing and cooking your holiday menu.

To prep your kitchen, you must also clean up and sanitize your cooking spaces to prevent contamination or spoilage of food and putting your family’s and guests’ health at risk.

If you have a coffee station in your kitchen, consider moving it to the family room, to prevent overcrowding your cooking space when guests feel like making a cup of coffee.

Prioritize safety.

Whether you’re staying home or going on a vacation for the holidays, you must make sure your home is safe and secure. If you’re preparing your home for an influx of guests, install enough lights for safe passage at night. Childproof your home as well to ensure the safety of the little ones. Make sure to take fire prevention measures as well like setting up smoke detectors.

If you’re planning to go on a vacation, you need to make your home a less appealing target for burglars. You need to make your home secure while you’re on vacation by installing security cameras and alarms, securing valuables in a safe, being discreet about your whereabouts, maintaining your home’s lived-in look, and by asking a trusted friend to keep an eye on your home.

Be holiday ready! Consider the above tips in preparing your home for the upcoming holidays! J
