How to Save On Heating Costs This Winter Season

12/13/2016 5:02 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
As the temperatures drop this cold season, the heating costs usually rise. However, by fixing your home’s problem areas and doing a few more energy-saving hacks, you can cut down your heating bills for winter.

Although winter can be an expensive season of the year because of the additional heating needs it brings, you can reduce how much you spend on energy. With a few adjustments and hacks, you can spend your budget on buying Christmas presents instead of too expensive heating bills.

To get you started, here are tips and hacks to help you save on heating costs this winter season:

1. Perform a winter maintenance in and out of your home.

Make sure every corner of your house – whether indoors or outdoors – is ready for the cold weather. Have a careful look at areas where leaks, gaps, and cracks may be present; and immediately subject them for repairs. More than that, schedule your heating equipment for maintenance to ensure they’re functioning at their best condition. Defective heating equipment may require more energy to work, thus, subjecting you to high heating costs.

2. Wrap up and warm yourself in winter clothing.

One of the easiest ways to cut down your heating bills this winter is through bundling up with warm clothes and accessories. Cozy sweaters, gloves, and socks will warm you up without the need to turn up your heating equipment.

You can also decorate your home with accessories that can make you feel warm and cozy through the cold weather. Examples of these include area rugs for floor insulation, throw blankets for a warmer couch, and decorative candles.

3. Load up your pantry with thermogenic foods.

Another practical tip to reduce your need to heat up using equipment is through loading on foods that will give you warmth in the wintertime. There are foods that can help produce heat inside your body and regulate your body temperature.

Examples of these thermogenic foods include lean meats and proteins, complex carbohydrates, fresh ginger root, green tea, bananas, and chili peppers. So, on preparing your daily menu for winter, incorporate these into your recipes.

4. Cut your shower time in half to save on water heating costs.

Cutting down your shower time in winter even with just a few minutes can save you gallons of water in just a month. More than that, reducing your shower time by half can also reduce your water heating expenses by 33 percent.

To cut down on heating costs by at least 3 to 5%, lower down your water heater temperature to 120ºF. Other ways to save on water heating while you shower include turning off the water while you’re soaping, shaving, and shampooing.

5. Let the sun’s rays enter into your home for free heat.

Take advantage of the free warmth the sun is giving out. On winter days, open the curtains on your south-facing windows to let the sun’s free heat enter your home. After the sun goes down, put back the curtains to keep the warmth in.

To make sure you’re getting the most out of the sun’s free heat, keep your windows open while the sun’s still up. You also need to trim trees, etc. that block your windows as they may hinder the direct sunlight from entering your home.

Besides doing the usual insulating and weather-stripping to save energy, the above examples are easier and practical ways to save on heating expenses this winter season. So, check all areas of your home, repair the problem areas, and practice the above winter energy saving tips.

Cut down your heating expenses this winter and spend them on Christmas presents instead!
