Indoor Plants You Need In Your Bedroom for Better Sleep

11/2/2017 12:30 AM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro

2017’s greenery theme isn’t only good as aesthetic. Bringing in plants into your home can actually improve your health and the quality of your sleep.

Greenery, Pantone’s Color of the Year 2017, is symbolic of fresh beginnings, vitality, pursuit of personal passions, and reconnection to nature. One way to incorporate the color of the year into your home before 2017 ends is through bringing in indoor plants.

Plants aren’t only good in giving homes a fresh and rejuvenating vibe; they provide other health benefits as well. Included in the many benefits of plants are stress relief, air purification, noise reduction, medication, improved concentration, and better sleep quality.

If you’re one who finds it difficult to sleep each night, you might want to add sleep-inducing houseplants in your bedroom. Here are some of those houseplants:

Jasmines aren’t only pleasing to the eyes; they’re also beneficial for sleep. Although they are more known for their tiny white or yellow flowers, these plants also give off a sweet scent that is effective in encouraging sleep and relaxation. According to a study conducted by psychologists at Wheeling Jesuit University, jasmine odor leads to decreased anxiety and a more restful sleep.

Jasmine can either be planted and grown in a pot or hanging basket with any good potting soil. It grows best when placed on the windowsill under direct sunlight during summer and spring. However, during winter, the sunlight may not need to be direct. This fall, a jasmine plant doesn’t need too much watering unlike during summer. In winter, keep the jasmine plant slightly dry.

Aloe Vera

The Aloe Vera plant doesn’t only take pride in its skin-healing properties and air purification capabilities. The gel from its leaves is often used for treating minor burns, cuts, sunburns, and insect bites while the plant itself produces oxygen that improves air quality. These qualities make this attractive succulent plant an effective tool in promoting healthy, quality sleep each night.

Valerian is a perennial flowering plant popular for its sweet-scented flowers and long plant stalks. They often come in colors white or pink. Because valerian flowers are tight and compact, they make a great addition to any room without taking up so much space. More than being an eye candy decoration, it is also commonly known for its outstanding sleep-inducing properties.

Valerian contains isovaleric acid and valepotriates which help relax the muscles and the central nervous system. This quality makes it one of the best plants to use as a functional bedroom decoration. According to a study published on National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)’s website, valerian extract improved sleep quality and helped people with insomnia.

When it comes to relaxing plants and scents, lavender is always included in the list. This shrub-like herb is more than just a pretty plant. It produces relaxing, soothing, and sedative effects when its scent is inhaled. For years, lavender has been proven to lower stress levels, blood pressure, and heart rate making it a perfect companion if you want to have a deeper and more restful sleep.

The bright colored gerbera daisies that come in white, orange, yellow, purple, and pink aren’t only pleasing to the eyes. More than that, they are also known for their air purification properties. Even a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) study proves gerbera purifies the air. Unlike other plants, a gerbera plant releases oxygen at night making it an effective sleep aid.
Besides encouraging sleep and providing relief for breathing-related illnesses, gerberas also promote happiness and positivity during the waking up process. They are also easy to grow. You only need to plant them in sandy soil, water them in the morning, and place them in an area with direct sunlight. But as its flowers begin to bloom, water them less to prevent them from rotting.

Peace Lily

Peace lily’s elegant white flowers and long dark green leaves make it a relaxing plant to look at. But, more than that, it promotes air purification. In fact, like the gerbera daisies, the peace lily has also been approved by NASA as one of the best indoor plants to fight air pollution. More than that, it also increases a room’s humidity by 5% which is good for healthy breathing while sleeping.

What are you waiting for? Find some cute pots or planters and start decorating your bedroom with the above sleep-inducing plants. For sure, your room will be IG-worthy – more than that, a more conducive place for sleep and relaxation. So, start planting today to harvest more zzzzzzzzzzzzs.
