Natural Ways to Shoo Mosquitoes Away From Your Home

4/11/2017 5:44 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
As you welcome the spring season, beautiful plants and flowers start to grow and bloom. However, with spring also comes the beginning of mosquito season.

Weather and temperature both play huge roles in mosquito activity. During warm months that start in spring, more and more mosquito eggs start to hatch. And as the summer season comes, mosquito season also reaches its peak.

Although no one can can’t control the varying temperatures the different seasons bring, you can discourage mosquitoes from breeding. This season, you should focus not only on spring cleaning but also on eliminating mosquito activity.

With that, here are natural ways to eliminate mosquitoes, their eggs and larvae included, without having to use harsh chemicals and sprays:

Get rid of standing water.

Mosquitoes find standing or stagnant water as an excellent breeding ground for their eggs. Perform a thorough search in and out of your home, especially in your yard, and make sure you have no stagnant water open to mosquitoes.

Make sure your gutters are free from stagnant water as well. Even a little amount of water can be a breeding ground for mosquito larvae.

Discard abandoned containers.

Abandoned open and empty containers like cans, pots, buckets, planters, etc. can accumulate and hold stagnant water. Besides clearing out any stagnant water in your yard, you need to dispose all abandoned containers too.

If you can’t dispose these items, just make sure to overturn them or cover them with a lid so that they won’t collect water. For water containers you can’t empty, add a few squirts of dishwashing liquid to stop mosquito development.

Grow mosquito-repelling plants.

Besides keeping your yard trimmed, you can also plant mosquito-repelling plants that drive off mosquitoes naturally. More than their effective mosquito-repelling benefits, these plants smell a whole lot better than usual insect sprays.

To naturally shoo mosquitoes away from your home, here are plants and herbs you should plant:

  • Citronella. Although its smell is very appealing to us humans, mosquitoes can’t stand it.
  • Peppermint. Its oil is very effective in eliminating other pests besides mosquitoes.
  • Lavender. Mosquitoes, moths, and flies can’t stand the heavenly smell of lavender.
  • Catnip. Its nepetalactone content is a natural insect repellent that mosquitoes hate.
  • Basil. Although it keeps bugs and mosquitoes away as it is, mosquito larvae find its oil very toxic.
  • Marigolds. These flowers are far greater than their beauty; they contain pyrethrum, an ingredient usually used in insect repellents.

Grow plants in your yard that don’t only add to your home’s visual appeal, grow plants that can also shoo away mosquitoes the natural way.

Groom and trim your yard.

Although mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, during the heat of the day, their favorite places to hide and rest are grassy and shrubby areas. So to keep these mosquitoes at bay, make sure to keep your grass and shrubbery trimmed.

While doing garden work, make sure to wear light-colored clothing because light colors most often repel mosquitoes and keep them at bay. Apply natural mosquito repellents on your skin as well – repellents you can even make yourself.

Make natural insect repellents.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), a mixture of eucalyptus and lemon oil makes an effective natural insect repellent. Cineole, an active component in both the eucalyptus and lemon offers insect-repellent properties.

More than that, this mixture also boasts of antiseptic properties as well. To make this natural insect repellent, mix equal parts of lemon and eucalyptus oil, then apply on your body. Shoo away mosquitoes without harming your skin.

Although it may sound cliché, Benjamin Franklin’s saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” still holds true even with fighting off mosquitoes. So this spring, prevent mosquitoes from breeding in your home with the above tips. Enjoy mosquito-free days no matter what season!
