Obsessive Cleaning Habits That Are Ruining Your Stuff

11/19/2017 7:37 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro

Cleaning is good, but, too much of it can wear down your belongings faster. When it comes to cleaning, more doesn’t always equal better.

Achieving a sparkly clean home is still possible even without spending most of your time and effort cleaning it. Yes, you can still have a clean home even without slaving yourself to cleaning chores.

In fact, when it comes to house cleaning, more doesn’t always mean better. Wiping or using too much product on your belongings is a no-no. Doing such things can only wear them down faster.

The dangers of obsessive cleaning

Besides easily worn down belongings, obsessive cleaning also brings negative effects to health. According to the Cleaning Expert, obsessive cleaning can do more harm than good. For children, keeping things too clean can make them overly sensitive to different stimulants in the environment, thus, increasing their risks of getting asthma, eczema, and auto-immune diseases.

Besides getting rid of the “good germs” that promote healthy immunity, obsessive and excessive cleaning can even introduce toxic chemicals such as phthalates, chlorine, formaldehyde, and the like into your home and your health through household cleaners, detergents, air fresheners, etc.

When cleaning becomes extreme

If you describe yourself as a clean freak, take note of the following obsessive cleaning habits that are ruining your stuff you need to stop ASAP:

#1 Spraying products direct to your furniture will only give you a lot more to clean up. When you spray any cleaner directly on your couch, for example, you’re only extending the time you’ll need to wipe off the chemical. Likewise, if you do the same with your wooden furniture, you’re just attracting more dust. Spraying cleaning polish directly on your wooden furniture can lead to a filmy build-up that is hard to remove and more attractive to dust.

The more appropriate thing to do is to spray the cleaner or polish on a cloth first before passing it gently across your furniture’s surface. Also, avoid over spraying.

#2 Using too much detergent on stained clothes can only give you clothes that are harder to rinse. Contrary to your belief, more detergent doesn’t equate to more spotless and fresh-smelling clothes. In fact, using too much detergent can hamper cleaning.

Too many suds tend to cushion fabrics and dirt which results in trapped stains. For truly clean laundry, follow the instructions written on your detergent container.

#3 Washing clothes after every single wear must only be practiced with underwear, camisoles, leggings, socks, T-shirts, whites, silks, and sweaty gym clothes. For many items, washing after every single wear can only result in faded and worn down clothing.

According to the American Cleaning Institute, some clothes can be worn 2 or more times before washing. These include jeans, outer clothes, bras, and pajamas.

#4 Vacuuming carpets and rugs often per day may look like the best and easiest way to clean up pet shedding and dander. However, if you don’t have young ones or furry friends around, vacuuming your rugs and carpets can hold off longer to once a month.

Over vacuuming can damage both your vacuum and your carpet. There’s no need to vacuum daily unless needed. Vacuuming twice a week to once a month is fine.

#5 Washing mirrors and glass windows and doors a lot, especially when you see even just a single fingerprint, can do them more harm than good. Too much moisture from over spraying and wiping can dull and damage or remove the glass or mirror’s backing.

Thoroughly washing glass windows can be done every few months to twice per year. For best results, use distilled water to prevent leaving behind stubborn streaks.

Save yourself some slack, and don’t slave yourself to cleaning too much. It’s important to maintain a good balance between good hygiene and obsessive cleaning.
