Old-Fashioned Home Cleaning Tips That Still Work Today

5/14/2017 8:06 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
When it comes to maintaining a sparkly clean home, our grandmothers seem to know best.

Do you remember the days when you used to stay with your grandparents during vacations? Never did you see their home filled with dust and clutter, right? Even without advance technology, they were truly able to maintain a clean and orderly home.

Although many new trends are emerging today, probably because of the advancements in technology, some practices still stay even when they’re over a century old. Concrete examples of which include the best and effective home cleaning practices.

In fact, some of the cleaning practices we do today actually are way older than us, and yet, they are still effective. Here are old-fashioned home cleaning tips you can practice that still work today:

Make your own all-natural cleaners.

In the ancient times, people are less prone to chemical exposure because they use only natural products in their homes. Besides being light on the environment, the natural, homemade cleaners they use are also light on the budget.

  • Lemon juice

To make an all-natural cleaner, all you need is to mix one part distilled white vinegar, two parts water, and a squeeze of lemon juice. This solution can be used in many parts of the house – bathroom, kitchen counters, floors, etc.

To maintain a fresh-smelling home, you can make your own home deodorizing spray with a mixture of lemon juice and water. You can also display a vase of lavender instead. Lavenders can deter moths away from your home too.

  • Oil and fats

In the old times, different oils and fats from both plants and animals are used by our ancestors for different household uses – cooking, medicinal purposes, personal health, lighting, and cleaning. And, they’re still effective up to present.

To clean and polish wooden furniture, you can make an all-natural polish solution that’s almost like Pledge but without the chemicals. Just mix together a small amount of olive oil and lemon essential oil, then apply using a dry cloth.

  • Salt

Back then, salt is considered as a prized possession and even given as a salary to soldiers in Rome. Salt is also one of the most common housewarming gifts then. Truly, salt does more than just play a role in cooking and preserving food.

Because of salt’s abrasive properties, it truly works wonders in removing caked on grime, grease, and stains. Sprinkle salt over your grills, pans, etc. and let it absorb the stains before rubbing. You can also do a salt rub for your cutting boards.

  • White vinegar

Dating back to 3000 BCE, vinegar is already being used in Egypt to fight bacteria. In many ancient cultures, vinegar was used for various purposes including food preservation, food enhancement, medicinal purposes, cleaning, and the like.

To achieve crystal clear windows and mirrors, make a cleaning solution by mixing 50% white wine vinegar with 50% hot water. Place it in a spray bottle. Spritz the solution on your mirrors and windows. Then, use newspapers for wiping.

To unclog your drains and address your dirty dishes, use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda as your cleaning solution. Let the chemical reaction of these two do the cleaning for you. After that, pour some boiling water in your drain.

Dry your beddings out in the sun.

Because washers and dryers aren’t really available yet in the old times, our ancestors used to line dry their laundry out in the sun. Besides making beddings, linens, and clothes smell divine, line drying is cheap and enviro-friendly too.

Other benefits of line drying in the sun include whiter whites, reduced wrinkles in clothes, longer-lasting clothes, and elimination of static cling.

Always practice cleaning as you go.

Our grandparents never practiced dilly-dallying. They deal with chores head on. They never leave their beds unmade and address messes immediately. Because of this trait, they never have to face and worry about a pile of cleaning tasks.

If you want to maintain an always sparkly clean home, get your home straightened right away. Never leave a cleaning task hanging. If you can do it now, don’t wait for another day to do it. Make sure you always practice cleaning as you go.

Our grannies know best! So don’t hesitate to go old school in cleaning your home. You surely would like to have a sparkly clean home sans the bills and expenses, right? J
