Parenting 101: How to Ensure A Safe Halloween for Your Kids

10/17/2016 5:39 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro
Halloween is an annual celebration most kids look forward to. However, with the many dangers happening every Halloween night, extra caution must be observed to ensure your child’s safety.

According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, twice as many children are hit and killed by cars on Halloween night than any other day of the year. Other injuries that endanger children on Halloween include wounds from tripping and falling, burns from flammable costumes, and injuries from sharp props and objects.

As a parent or a guardian, it’s your responsibility to ensure a safe and fun Halloween night for your children. So, to safeguard your whole family from the potential dangers of Halloween night, practice below safety tips and guidelines:

Dressing Up

Even your child’s costumes can lead them to potential accidents. So, whatever your child’s costume preference is, whether it be scary, comical, heroic, etc., it has to be safe. See below tips to hazard-proof your kids’ costumes:

  • Whether your child’s costume is store-bought or homemade, make sure it is made with flame-resistant materials – head to toe.
  • Only allow your child to wear a costume that is of the right size. A costume that’s too large for your kid can lead to trips and falls.
  • If possible, use facial paint or makeup instead of masks. A mask can obstruct your child’s vision, especially when crossing streets. However, make sure to pre-test the makeup you’ll be using a couple of days in advance.
  • For props such as swords, knives, wands, and the like, make sure they’re made out of soft materials, cardboard, or flexible materials.
  • Attach flashing lights or reflective tapes on your child’s costume so he or she can be easily seen in the dark, especially by motorists.

Trick or Treating

On your child’s way to different houses to ask for treats and candies, they can come across some potential hazards such as getting lost, getting hit by a car, tripping, having food allergies, etc. To ensure a safe trick-or-treat trip, you must:

  • Never allow your children to go trick-or-treating without adult supervision especially when they are still under 12 years of age. However, if they are already of age, teach them to go in groups and stick only to familiar areas.
  • For your older children, give them a time limit or a curfew. More than that, we suggest you also map out a safe route for them.
  • Teach your children always to walk and stay only on sidewalks or paths. Also, teach them never to dart out into the streets.
  • Remind your children to watch out for pets and animals. Some spooky costumes can scare pets leading them to act aggressively.
  • Instruct your children to wait until they get home before opening or munching on the treats they collected from trick-or-treating. Tell them you need to examine their collected treats first to make sure they’re all safe to eat.
  • If your child has a food allergy, look for homes displaying a teal-colored pumpkin. The Teal Pumpkin Project helps make sure kids with food allergies can enjoy trick-or-treating too. A teal pumpkin signals that a specific house offers non-food treats to trick-or-treaters.
  • Explain to your children the potential dangers they can experience from strangers. Teach them never to accept rides from unknown people nor enter an unfamiliar or strange home.
  • If a house feels strange, stay away from the area and simply leave. Teach them never to enter any home without their guardian.
  • Just in case of unforeseen events or emergency, ready an emergency card or your contact information in your child’s pocket or purse.

Hosting Parties

If you’re planning on hosting a Halloween party for your child’s friends or your nieces and nephews, make sure you’re giving them a fun yet safe party – from decorations to the menu. For a successful and safe party, you must:

  • Invite your young guest’s parents or guardian to accompany them at the party. This way their parents will feel more at ease.
  • Although hosting the party after dark is more spooky and Halloween-ish, it’s safer to host a party for the young ones during the day to accommodate their parents’ hectic schedules.
  • Use artificial or battery-operated lights instead of candles. Artificial ones are much safer to use especially with kids around.
  • Consider the common food allergens a child could be allergic to when preparing your Halloween menu. Try to avoid preparing meals and snacks with peanuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish.
  • Make sure your home is free from fall and trip hazards such as loose electric cords, fallen branches, scattered decorations, etc.

Halloween is meant to be a memorable celebration, especially for the young ones. Practice the above tips and guidelines to ensure a safe Halloween for your kids. Have a safe and spooky one!
