Every fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in the United States. It’s one of the most anticipated holidays in the country and is sometimes more celebrated than Christmas.
In 1621, the Pilgrims from England invited the local Native Americans to celebrate a harvest feast at the Plymouth Plantation after a successful growing season. The then three-day feast didn’t include the now-famous Turkey in their original menu. What they had in the 1621 Thanksgiving only included deer, goose, cod, and lobster.
It was in 1789, under former President George Washington’s presidency, November 26 was declared as a national day of thanksgiving and prayer. 17 years and four presidencies after – because of Sarah Josepha Hale’s campaign – the Thanksgiving Day was declared as a national holiday every last Thursday of November.
At present, the Thanksgiving holiday is widely celebrated by Americans as an opportunity to express their gratitude for all they have received such as the gift of family, friends, and bounty
What’s the star of every party? Of course, it’s the menu. As a popular quote says, “nothing brings people together like good food.” For a savory and mouth-watering dinner table this Thanksgiving, see food preparation tips and recipes below:
