Winter Survival: How to Stay On The Safe Side This Season

12/5/2017 9:39 PM Comments Posted By Floralyn Teodoro

“Winter is coming.” Are you and your loved ones ready for when it comes?

According to Red Cross, hundreds of Americans are injured or killed each winter due to extreme exposure to cold, vehicle accidents because of wintry roads, and house fires from improper use of heaters.

To protect yourself and your family and stay on the safe side this season, here are tips on what you can do:

Wear proper winter clothes.

During winter, the wind can be really chilly. To protect yourself from the wind chill, avoid staying out in the cold for too long and dress appropriately. Wear gloves, hats, scarves, and warm clothes.

To avoid being frostbitten, avoid exposing any part of your body to the cold when not necessary.

To avoid hypothermia, apart from wearing proper winter clothes, you also need to drink enough warm fluids but avoid alcohol and caffeine. To maintain body heat, you also need to keep moving.

Winter-proof your home.

Before winter officially arrives, you need to prepare your home early on by winter-proofing it. How?

✔ Attach weather stripping to all your doors and window sills for a well-insulated home.

✔ Install a carbon monoxide detector and make sure it’s functioning properly.

✔ Install insulation sleeves for your exposed pipes to prevent them from bursting in the cold.

✔ Keep fire extinguishers handy, and make sure everyone in your household knows how to use them properly.

✔ Have a professional contractor check and ensure the structural ability of your roof to prepare it in any case the accumulation of snow becomes heavy during winter.

✔ In any case the power goes out, make sure you have extra blankets, sleeping bags, and warm coats ready to keep everyone at home warm.

Never plug space heaters into power strips to prevent house fires and other accidents.

✔ If you are relying on a wood-burning fireplace this winter, make sure to store enough wood. You also need to make sure your fireplace is safe and in good shape as well.

Ready a winter survival kit.

Whether you’re staying in or traveling this winter, one way to be safe is to have a winter storm survival kit available. This kit must contain your cell phone and charger, blankets or sleeping bags, flashlight and batteries, knife, non-perishable food, extra clothes, hygiene kit, first aid kit, water, and a battery-operated radio. If you’re a pet owner, prepare a separate kit for your pets as well.

If you plan to be on the road this winter, you must also include a sack of sand or cat litter, basic tool kit, shovel, tow rope, booster cables, water container, windshield scraper and brush, and roadmaps and compass in your kit. You also need to make sure to keep your vehicle’s gas tank full. Apart from that, have a mechanic ensure that your vehicle is in good shape before you travel.

Practice pet winter safety.

Winter isn’t only hard to bear for us humans. The cold season is especially difficult for outdoor pets. To make sure all of your pets are safe and secure this winter, bring them inside your home or a dry and warm sheltered area where there’s access to non-frozen food and drinking water.

If you have pets around, avoid the use of antifreeze. If the use of antifreeze is really needed, make sure to clean and wipe spills and keep it out of reach. This substance is a deadly poison for pets.

There’s another thing to watch out for in your pets. Your pets’ paws, along with their ears, legs, and tails, are the most susceptible to frostbite. When walking them outside, make them wear booties. If they refuse to do so, make sure to rinse or wipe their paws with a towel after the walk.

Tune in to storm warnings.

Always be on the alert. Be aware of winter storm watches and warnings by tuning in to NOAA Weather Radio, local news on radio or TV, and other reliable news sources for more information.

Stay on the safe side this season. Follow the above tips to enjoy a memorable and safe winter!
